Course Information
If you are at least 15 ½ years old and under 18 years of age, you must take a in order to get a California drivers license.
The California online drivers ed program is a state-mandated 30 hours long. The information in our course is broken up into 8 chapters, each covering a specific topic regarding driving in California. After you complete each chapter, you’ll be given a 10-question multiple-choice quiz. At the end of the course, you will be given a 50-question final exam. You will successfully complete the course by passing with an 80% or greater.
Yes – our online course is DMV-licensed and meets all of the state’s requirements needed to get your California learners permit.
That’s up to you! Although the California online drivers ed program is 30 hours long, you can do the work at your own pace.
Not to worry. You’re allowed unlimited retakes on the final exam for free – you’re practically guaranteed to pass.
As soon as you complete the course, we will send you your certificate, you will have different options to choose from after completing the course.

California Learners Permit and Drivers License Information
If you’re 15 ½ – 18 years of age, you must:
- Apply for a learners permit and hold it for at least 6 months
- Pass a behind-the-wheel class
- Practice behind-the-wheel training for 50 hours (10 at night)
- Pass the DMV road test
If you’re over 18 years of age, you must:
- Apply for a license and pass the written test
- Be issued a driver’s permit to practice in-car training
- Pass the DMV road test
If you are 15 ½ – 18 years of age, you must get a learners permit and have it for six months before earning your drivers license.
If you are 18 or older and have never been licensed, you will receive a drivers permit so you practice driving legally. You can schedule a DMV road test once you feel comfortable behind the wheel.
There are a few requirements and things you’ll need to do to get your California learners permit.
- AGE: You must be between 15 1/2 and 18 years old to apply for your permit.
- APPLICATION: Fill out the DL 44 form that’s available at your local DMV office (copies are not accepted, must be original).
- SIGNATURES: Because you are a minor, you’ll need to get your parent or legal guardian’s signature on the DL 44 before turning it in.
- VISIT THE DMV: To apply for your permit you have to go down to the DMV in person (if you want to avoid the long lines, make an appointment online!).
- DRIVERS ED: If you’ve already completed drivers ed, bring your certificate of completion with you.
- IDENTIFICATION: When you’re at the DMV, they will take your photo and your thumbprint.
- OTHER INFO: Be sure you have your Social Security number, birth certificate, and legal citizen status paperwork.
- PAYMENT: You will have to pay an application fee, which entitles you to three exams (of any kind) over the course of a year.
- VISION EXAM: Whether you wear glasses, contacts, or your eyes are fine without, you’ll have to pass a vision test. 20/40 vision is the DMV’s standard requirement.
- WRITTEN EXAM: You will also be tested on traffic laws and signs. You’re granted three chances to pass this test.
To apply for a California drivers license, you must have:
- Had a learners permit for at least 6 months
- Passed behind-the-wheel instructions
- Driven the required 50 hours (10 at night)
- Passed the DMV road test
You can contact your local California DMV office to complete the paperwork and schedule appointments for your written and road tests. Find a DMV office near you.
You license will be mailed to you within 60 days of passing your road test. In the meantime, you will be handed a temporary printed license. Be sure you don’t lose it!
