Texas DPS Office Locations
Getting your driving needs taken care of Texas can be a bit tricky. In many states, the DMV handles just about every driving-related requirement, from getting your license to registering your car. In Texas, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) does some of the work. They do things a little bit differently in the Lone Star State – depending on what you need, you’ll be heading to either one of many Texas DPS locations, the Texas DMV website, or your local county tax office. Confused? We’ll help you figure out where you need to go for your drivers license or your car registration.
Find Your Local Texas DPS Office
All Texas drivers licenses – including learners permits, commercial licenses and motorcycle licenses – are handled directly by the Texas DPS. The Texas DPS website offers a number of online services, so it’s a good idea to start there if all you need is a license renewal. If you’re a new Texas driver, you’ll also want to start at the DPS website – the Texas DPS Locations page not only lets you find the Texas DPS office closest to you, it allows you schedule appointments and drive tests.
Texas Vehicle Registration – Texas DMV and Local County Tax Offices
The Texas DPS office doesn’t take care of vehicle registration. That’s done via the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, in conjunction with the state tax department; county collection offices handle all related payments.
If you’re looking to register your vehicle, you’ll want to start at the Texas DMV website. If you’re new to the state, you’ll need to submit your paperwork and fees at your local county tax office.
