New York Drivers License DMV Reservations & Appointments: Booking Guide
What is the Best Time to Visit the DMV? While appointments would be great for cutting wait-times, the New York DMV unfortunately only allows appointments to be booked specifically for road tests. All other DMV processes must be done on a first-come first-serve basis, which means that wait times can get pretty long during peak hours. It’s best to plan your walk-in visits to the DMV during slower periods of the day, or you could spend several hours on the most basic services. A little planning ahead can make a big difference when waiting for the New York drivers license appointment.
Although it can be tough to perfectly predict when the DMV may be swamped, there are definitely patterns of traffic that they typically follow. It is almost guaranteed that a large influx of people will take care of their DMV business immediately before or after a period of unavailability. This means offices are generally busy:
- At the beginning and end of the week
- Right before or after holidays
- During lunch hours, around noon
Your best bet for a painless DMV experience is to avoid those times. Instead, try to head to the DMV:
- In the middle of the week, Tuesday to Thursday
- In the middle of the month
- Right as the office opens
- Before the lunch rush.
How to Book a Road Test Appointment
Appointments for a DMV road test can be made online or over the phone. You can access their online Road Test Schedule System (RTSS) at any time except between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. You’ll be able to select the testing location of your choice, along with a selected specific time at which you’d like to take the test. You can also use this system to cancel and reschedule appointments should the need arise. To book by phone, all you need to do is call (518) 402-2100 and select a time that works for you.
